I've been renting the same home from the same landlord for 10+ years, do I own it?

Efren Clankscales: MAYBE you are confusing long leases with long rentals. In Hawaii, just last year, for the first time in Hawaiian history, those ending a 30 yearlease, went to court to get the lease converted to a 30 yr purchase and thosespecific leasees were granted fee simple--instead of being forced to walk awayempty handed. [their houses were both theirs and were debt free.]but for --as my peers said, a rental of 10 yrs, there is no inference of any lawthat denotes you earn fee simple rights and fee simple is the legal term thatyou are seeking.YOU Could try to offer him 5-10-15% of fair market value in cash as a motivatorbut --why would he accept it?...Show more

German Thal: When you buy it. You have no right to ownership ever and the landlord can evict you anytime he feels like it unless you live in a rent controlled city.

Stevie Goldey: Why the hell you would think you own the place just because you are renting it? i am sorry but your way of thinking i! s just stupid Buy your own place or take mortage.

Shamika Schools: None. You're RENTING. You have NO right to ownership at all. Just because you've lived there a long time doesn't mean you can just have it. There's nothing you can do unless you make a deal with the owner.

Debora Soliani: Of course not. You NEVER have owenrship rights to the house simply by renting it. EVER. You have NO legal standing to will the home to anyone, as you do not own it, nor will you ever own it until you actually BUY it. You can leave the house to her all you want, she will never get it, b/c you simply cannot will what you do not own.You can also never prevent him from selling it or renting it to someone else. If you don't have a lease, he doesn't even have an obligation to rent to YOU past next month....Show more

Marty Tichnell: You NEVER, NEVER, NEVER own the house. No matter how long you live in the place. How did you every even think that you would own it???EDIT:! oh, you are a "pit bull" owner. Sorry, but not even the grea! t Obama can change this law for you......Show more

Davis Zou: You have no rights to it. Ever. You are a tenant and nothing more, unless it's a lease option. You can't leave it to your daughter. YOu don't own and never will unless you buy it.Why on earth do you think you have any rights to it? You didn't buy it, you rented it.Unless you by the place, you can't leave it to your daughter. You can't leave the lease to your daughter either. She would have to apply on her own. The only choice is to add her to the lease when she is an adult and maybe they would let her stay. But they would have to approve her as a tenant on her own.Legally speaking....Show more

Mayola Sylva: I'm calling TROLL on this one.How can you even THINK that you have any right of ownership as a tenant? Get real!

Ariel Arons: Renting you never have rights over the house. You can't leave your daughter something you don't own. Your landlord may very well rent to your daughter. He can also se! ll and there is nothing you can do to prevent that

Cody Petrulis: What gives you the idea that paying rent gives you any right of ownership? It does not. You could rent the property for 100 years and all that you'd have at the end is a stack of rent receipts in exchange for having a roof over your head for 100 years.Since you don't own it, you cannot "leave it to your daughter." When you pass, if your daughter wishes to live there and the landlord wishes to keep her as a tenant, she can sign a lease in her own right and live there as long as she and the landlord both agree....Show more

Rubi Romo: I'm pretty sure you don't own it. My family were renting my old house for 26 years or so and we never owned it. But, I do know that it would have been easier to buy because of how much time we had spent there. I think he was offering to sell it for, like, $10,000 or so. So, you should probably just talk to your landlord and see if you can't start a rent to own, or if! he won't cut you a deal.
