Tory Clapper: All so called hand held radio frequencies are free, though the use of some does require that the operator have the proper license. The two most common for non-license use are the CB and FRS bands. The FRS ( family radio service ) is now the more popular as the units are less expensive (generally sold in pairs) and operate on FM rather than AM and so are twice as efficient.
