Should I admit myself to a mental health inpatient unit?

Alvaro Oare: Hi. Only a psychiatrist can admit you to a psych unit. If you feel that you need to be admitted you need to discuss it with your psychologist and she will in turn talk to the psychiatrist. Some young people believe that taking an overdose or making other suicidal gestures will get them admitted but actually the opposite is true. Mental health professionals can tell the difference between a real suicide attempt and parasuicide and they won't 'reward' parasuicide with an admission as it encourages behavioural problems. Inpatient treatment is a last resort in treatment options and unfortunately CAMHS beds are few and far between so an admission could be anywhere in the country, and an emergency admission could even be to an adult unit or a young offenders institution. If you are an imminent danger to yourself you can call 999 or walk into a A&E and you'll be seen by the mental health crisis team. They can admit you to a psych unit but are much more likely to pro! vide intense support in your own home until you're through this crisis....Show more

Joaquin Dronko: Go to an ER and tell them you are suicidal. You have an illness and need professional help. Period. If you had appendicitis, would you ask for other people's approval before getting medical help. The thing people don't understand is mental illness is really no different than physical illness in its acuity (seriousness) and must be treated in the same manner. A sick brain cannot make healthy, rational decisions, so get help while you are still able to realize you need it. Find professional mental health people who support you. This is key....Show more

Dallas Bartolini: Well young people keep mental institutions in business so you wouldnt be alone in that regard, and free meals are included.

Phillip Modafferi: If you think it will help then try it. I'm 17 and I went to one. It didn't help. It was hell

Refugio Gastineau: It's difficult to say if yo! u're overreacting or not. At 14, so many changes take place th! at a lot of folks of this age feel as if they're going mental. The chances are they wouldn't accept you anyway, even if you tried. Your psychologist may be able to give you the name of somebody you could contact & talk to in an emergency, but that's usually about as good as it gets. Still, give it a try, see if you can get some extra help but don't expect miracles....Show more

Stevie Goldey: I can help I have severe Bipolar disorder with anxiety and panic and have been hospitalized many times in a psych ward. It sounds like you wan to go to a psych hospital. Therapy takes time. Give it more time. If you are a danger to yourself suicidal then you should talk to your doctor about going to the hospital. Tell them why you want to go to a hospital and let your doctor decide if you need to go to a psych hospital. I REALLY hope that helps you bout If I helped you please vote me for best answer. Feel better HUGZ Raymond...Show more
