Air Force & Mental Health Job?

Bud Espenshade: DO NOT give up on your dream. I was told there wasn't anything available in the job I wanted 9 years ago when I enlisted and here I am STILL trying to cross over into my desired career field by branch transfer, becoming an Officer, applying to every program known to man, etc.You can check to see if there are any AD positions instead that might be available. Considering how short-handed many behavioral health clinics are, I cannot imagine why there are not more openings. Perhaps the difference between active and reserves is that significant. However, you should know that you will not be allowed to counsel anyone as a mental health technician. You can do intake data (demographics, a brief overview of why they are there, etc.) and score psychometric tests. You cannot conduct therapy unless you are a licensed mental health professional. If that is what you want to do instead, pursue your education goals first (PhD is required for psychologist and MSW is r! equired for social worker)....Show more

Sheron Perrez: I would sign up for the job that I wanted if there was a way. Think of this if they do downsize your selected job you can transfer out to something else if and when you need to.If you take somehthing else, and want to transfer into the job you want (mental health) you will have a harder time getting into it than if you started in it in the first place. If the job is not there in the future, then it is not there....and you will be able to find something else. You will likely stay in the medical career field. Don't worry if they are getting rid of it later on, if they still have it now.It sounds to me that the recruiter wants you to sign up for a job that is harder to fill....Show more
